Benitas — Rest in peace, my beauty

Benitas, my beautiful and badly missed little fellow

Born on St. Patrick's day, named a name that means "blessing," and gone from this world on Good Friday, perhaps little Benitas was never meant to stay in this world.

Benitas was an embryo transfer foal from my wonderful mare EMC Dominique (Don Schufro/ Rohdiamant) by the superb young dressage stallion Benidetto (Bellissimo M/ Cordoba). He was born March 17th and he fulfilled my wildest dreams for the cross. Tall, beautifully put together, beautifully marked, Beni was the best mover I may have ever produced. He always had a look at me attitude, posing and showing off at any opportunity. His walk was clear, his canter very balanced and his trot was perfect in its rhythm, suspension and power.

Beni had always been the picture of health, well nurtured by his surrogate dam Martha. That added to the shock when he suddenly became lethargic on April 21st. He was rushed to the equine clinic and his first bloodwork showed a very good prognosis — some sort of gastric bug caught very early that was likely to be quickly managed. Sadly, that was not the case. Beni crashed that night and a belly tap showed severe peritonitis. He was euthanized, as there was no hope and he was in great pain. A post mortem showed that little Beni had a colonic ulcer that his body had walled off until the very end when it began leaking into his abdomen. The poor little fellow had been sick for most of his short life without knowing it.

I will definitely repeat this breeding someday, as this little guy exactly what I hope for when I breed my mares. May he rest inpeace now. He is sadly missed by everyone who met him in his short life.

I'll lend you for a little while my grandest foal, HE said.
for you to love while he's alive and mourn when he is dead.
It may be one or twenty years, or days or months, you see,
but will you, till I take him back, take care of him for me?
He'll bring his charms to gladden you, and should his stay be brief,
you'll have treasured memories as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return,
but there are lessons taught on earth I want this foal to learn.
I've looked the wide world over In my search for teachers true.
And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes, with trust, I've chosen you.
Now will you give him total love? not think the labor vain,
nor hate me when I come here to take him back again?
I know you'll give him tenderness and love will bloom each day,
and for the happiness you've known, forever grateful stay
But should I come and call for him much sooner than you'd planned,
you'll brave the bitter grief that comes, and someday, understand.
