Elite Mare Donatella — sorely missed

Donnatella conformation

We were thrilled to add Elite Mare Donnatella (Donnerschlag/ Wenzel/ Domspatz) to our mare band from well respected fellow breeder Laura Whitford of Shadow Fox Farm in Virginia in August 2004. Donnatella was a gorgeous black mare with chrome, excellent gaits, wonderful inspection and mare performance test scores in Germany, as well as a production record that is what any breeder would want in a top broodmare. She produced five foals from four different stallions for Laura, all of which were top quality youngsters. She gave us Remembranz, a beautiful bay colt by the lovely Oldenburg stallion Resonanz (Rohdiamant/ Cordeur), on May 16th, 2005.

Donnatella headTragically, we lost Donatella the following day to a colon twist. Despite all efforts by our vet and surgeons at the UF Veterinary Hospital, Dona could not be saved. We treasure the time we had with this noble, kind and talented mare and will grieve for her, but will remember her through her son, Remembranz. Please see a tribute to this wonderful mare at her former owner's site. It is well worth visiting to see this lovely mare's excellent offspring who will carry on for her.

Donnatella was by the marvelous Donnerhall son Donnerschlag (seen in the picture below), who stood as the flagship stallion at Gestuet St. Ludwig for many years. Donnerschlag was trained through the FEI levels in Germany. He proved himself at his stallion testing in 1990 with an overall score of 133.75 (4th out of 83), a dressage score of 134.22 (second place), and an above average jumping score of 115.26. He went on to sire stallion sons, SPS mares, auction horses and performance horses.

DonnerschlagDonnatella's dam was by the Hanoverian stallion Wenzel, out of a Domspatz mother. Wenzel was known as a producer of top dressage horses. He won his stallion performance in 1979. He was the 1982 Reserve Champion at the DLG. He produced 68 state's premium mares and 80 auction horses. Eight riding horses and one approved son sold for more than DM100,000. His son Walk On Top won the 1998 World Cup final with Sweden's Louise Nathhorst. He is prominent in many top mare's damlines as well.

Domspatz (1952, black 16h Hanoverian) was a top sire of jumping horses. Domspatz shows up in many top quality damlines, and undoubtedly gave Donnatella the jumping talent that she displayed at her mare performance test. Domspatz was by Domitz out of a Graf mare.
